WE WERE GODS
(An Ode to 100 Fourth Street)
By Brian Hannon
We were gods in Julie’s backyard
Behind her play palace in west Bangor, this heaven a private club
Lounging on the porch in Greek and Roman poses of repose
Gods, every damned one of us
Kobe and Jake ran about, wrestling, testing each other as dogs do
We shouted out arbitrary commands and lorded over the lawn
Sent them there and again like deities playing with our creations
Zeus and Hera, Apollo and Aphrodite, all of us with a little Bacchus to boot
In the hot kiss of the closest star, the lingering warmth of our night
embraces
We sunned in silence and ruled this regal little world
No one could see inside our circle, the pleasant secrets swirling there
No one could touch us, the serenity impervious to everything beyond
The earth stood still in those long moments, stretching to minutes, memories
In that backyard, we were gods
