LETTERS FROM BOBOLINK FARM
By Barbara Tatham Johnson

SUMMER FIELD

By Sally Rowe Joy

I love the painting Summer Field
that’s hanging on my bedroom wall—
the artistic creation of a friend
and a birthday gift from my husband
who asked the unexpected question:
“What would you really like?”

From top down, the sky.
Two rows of mountains next—
the upper set in lavender,
the lower, darker purple.
Below, a row of evergreens.
Then, in mixed but subtle colors,
with a sort of wave-like texture,
the field itself.

At mid-canvas,
on the left, three evergreens.
On the right, a deciduous tree.

And in the foreground,
that which beckoned me
and made me want to own it:
Wheat grass and field flowers
blown leftwards by a summer breeze.
The irresistible touch: wild chicory
ready to take flight,
each blossom seemingly a cross
between a small bird
and a butterfly.

I can almost hear the music
and the poetry
in this Summer Field
and feel the breeze against my skin.
