SCRIMSHAW
By Roy Potter
In a museum in Belfast
The tooth lodges in us
While the carver and his girl
Have fallen out of the world
Happy man to have done what
He intended in making her last
Blown hair in dancing ringlets
Under a straw hat as he
Imagined her before the wind
Smiling the way he saw her
Every day from the Azores
To the Sea of Japan
What do we fashion
For love or remembrance
Where is that salt faith
Our whale’s tooth in time
