SCHOONERS

You can see them in old photos:
schooners with bright white sails
built more than a century ago
just down the road at the edge
of the tidal estuary
where part of the widening river
slips into shelter
behind an island.
I see them, however,
whenever my idle eyes,
drifting with the incoming tide,
look out over the quiet
green and blue expanse
of marsh grass, water, ducks.
