Rainy Day Jazz

Ian MacDougal’s group
playing hot and sweet,
outside the rain has
turned to sleet,
and I’m remembering
the small jazz café
in Montreal where I first
heard him, and where I
ate skewered scallops
with Canadian bacon
drenched with butter
and sherry broiled
over apple and maple
chips, and drank
a carafe of white
wine before running
across the square
to see the collection
of Russian Icons housed
in the church where the
apostles walked the parapet
on the hour each day,
every day
as the bell tolled
the hour.
