PAULOWNIA, THE TREE
By Liz Moser
Genus: Scrophularicaeae; species: Tomentosa (royal), Kawakamii (dragon)
Empress and slut.
Asian tradition, revered,
plants one for each girl child;
tree and girl child grow together
till marriage when the tree transforms
into the music of a happy life—a pipa lute or tansu chest.
Her silky wood, light as air,
is highly prized.
Here in the west,
she is a weed tree:
after lilacs, before roses, her purple torches
hang above the railroad track, in vacant lots,
keeping company with liquor bottles,
rats and garbage bags.
Old men seeking shelter from spring rain and wind
huddle in torn blankets at her feet.
Last year’s opened seedpods hang in great grape bunches,
heart-shaped leaves erupt along her gangly branches;
yet she thrives,
tall and graceless, bark striated
like scratches from some night-wandering feline,
branch end blossoms scoffing at the sky,
irreverent.
