LETTERS FROM BOBOLINK FARM

OLD GHOSTS

By M. Kelly Lombardi

Celebrating today, 40 years of living on the wild salt coast,
and a decade and a half of living here
in this funky little house, perched on the edge
        of the bluff.

Celebrating today, 25 years of living, free from angry ghosts
who kept trying to drag me back there
to that nightmare world of conspiracies of silence
and wise guys and their “ladies” with the bleached hair
and modified breasts and diamonds paid for by their
favors and their silence and their turning the other way.

Today, stretching and celebrating, I bake blueberry pies, two of them, one
for son-in-law and one for a friend; I weed the rose bed, I walk
        dog—Black Starbuoy—my constant companion, I read a book,
a new mystery set in Ireland and I ready myself for a dinner guest
tonight. Later, I’ll put La Traviata on, uncork the wonderful Tuscany
wine I brought home from Italy, pick roses for the old
dining room table and enjoy, later, the pleasant banter of my guest.

I will go to bed later than usual with the sound of the waves to lull me, and
maybe hear the moan of the lighthouse if the fog is still hovering.
Black Starbuoy will nudge me good night and then curl up on his bed.
He will dream his dog dreams and I will dream my woman dreams
        and no ghosts will visit.

Ghosts don’t like salt air.
