LETTERS FROM BOBOLINK FARM
By Barbara Tatham Johnson

MEMORIAL DAY: MAY 05

By H. R. Coursen

It is the season of many greens—the pale
leaves of the birch, the mid-green of the beach,
the maple pulling redness from the bud
along the spine, the deeper oak, the swail
in the swamp, almost white against the reach
of rain, these many days of rain. The spruce,
of course, are blue, the only hint of sky
the prophet says we’ll have. Low-lying lead
cancels all horizons when cumulous
is king. And spring is mere illusion here
of many ghosts of green, of those who die
in smoke, in flame, as all the lives reduce
to ash, as summer leads to crystal where
we live, and ignorance is no excuse.
