LONG DISTANCES
By Matthew Mayo
Squinting into blue,
I am as sure of the plane, still unseen ten
twenty seconds after I look up from this page,
as I am of my wife, her warm voice
reaching me from the kitchen.
The delay that distance wedges
between sound and sight is a test.
But my faith in the plane’s aeronautic abilities,
that she is making lunch,
is strong.
I once heard all sounds
ever made are still with us,
fractioning from the moment of their urging,
the duration between each least note
tautening long
past the point of clarity.
Deeper into the house, further into the cloud bank,
and the sounds of wife and plane become
the dissonant sing
sing of a thousand meadow crickets.
Or perhaps
it is just one
adding his worth to a past collective
already fading.
