GRANITE
By Roy Potter
It plays in yards,
Porpoising out of the ground,
Diving back down to reappear
In a neighbor’s field.
It falls in cliffs, slopes,
Terraces, into the ocean
Bearing pines on its back
To surface as porcupine islands.
Ten feet from our cottage
Someone beyond memory
Has driven two large ringbolts
Up to the eyes in a massive
Outcropping to anchor the moon.
Downhill in the bay is a pier
Used by two lobster boats.
Of quarried blocks, it will be there when
You have finished reading this, when
Global warming has submerged it, when
It reappears at the death of the sun, when
There is dissolution and only granite.
