FULL WOLF MOON
By Bob Bradshaw
We keep our children close.
And we stoke our fires
to keep the gathering wolves at bay.
Like our kids, these starved wolves
are most vulnerable
when caribou are scarce.
When the land, a thinning scalp
of grasses, hides its face
under a thick hood
of snow.
Exhausted, like us
the wolves keep to the roads,
away from deep snowdrifts.
Our dogs track their howls.
Tonight we sleep bellied up
to each other for warmth,
dogs, kids, parents
bracing against the cold.
Men stay up and feed the flames.
The wolves grow silent,
as they edge closer
to our dying
fires.
