LETTERS FROM BOBOLINK FARM
By Barbara Tatham Johnson

FRIDAY: 9 SEPT. 05

By H. R. Coursen

In memory of Anton “Skip” Campanella,
                               of Millburn, New Jersey,
                                          killed after a fuel-starvation flameout,
while flying with the Blue Angels.

Sorrow has a black face, and she holds
a child in her arms. The eyes are large
against the thinness of the bone. The rage
of flood swings a corpse along the folds
of sewage sliding past. The buildings stand,
dark against the night below the mild
stars in late summer. They show no light
within, merely reflect the neutral sight
of what looks on—like the eyes of the child.

And here, the Navy tears the fabric of
the sky, and rips apart a noon. The surge
of engines sends vapor out above,
reminding us again of who’s in charge.
The white god of war (no god of love)
says, kill again, in case you have the urge.
