EARLY APRIL
By H. R. Coursen
The old road, macadam poured on clay,
splinters as it goes uphill between
the pines. It looks for a moment like the scene
below an aircraft in a spin, the way
the earth splits apart, white and black,
farm and road, and hard as rock. And so
I sense again the ancient vertigo,
the face inside the dream that I’d call back
if I knew how, the voice of whatever might
have been. You set your teeth against the shrouds
of winter morning, and you watch the light
go out too soon, and all the headless crowds
of sky in March, and crystal down the night
from stars that fell apart above the clouds.
