DEEP IN THE VALLEY

Trapped between rocks
so thick we can barely move
coyote and I squeeze
belly to belly.
Paw atop hand
we push
heave shoulders
against granite.
Our howls
strained and weak
fail to alert the moon
of our plight
or the wise barn owl
perched overhead
as a band of coyotes
marches single file
into the night.
