LETTERS FROM BOBOLINK FARM
By Barbara Tatham Johnson

CLASS CONSCIOUS

By Sally Rowe Joy

I was the girl at Sunday School
in scuffed-up oxfords with dingy bobby socks,
trying, unsuccessfully, to pretend an unawareness
that the other girls wore shiny patent leather Mary Janes
and lace-cuffed socks that always looked
just-out-of-the-package new that very day.
If ever I had mustered the courage to ask,
my mother would gladly have told me
what my options were:
to go as I was, or not to go at all.
I chose to go. She stayed at home.
Our reasons weren’t the same.

My daughter went to Sunday School from babyhood.
I took her there myself.
Before the child could stand, her Sunday-best
included shiny patent leather shoes and lace-trimmed socks.
How pleased I was that we were able to provide them.
And how surprised I was that bright spring day
when she informed me
that she liked the shiny white shoes better!
Somewhat reluctantly,
I bought the ones she had selected.
