CIRCUMSTANCES

Eve sometimes dreams
that, like Sleeping Beauty, if
circumstances could
strike her suddenly
exactly in the right spot
just behind her heart
she’d cough up that bite of apple,
wet with spit.
Then the black beetles of virtue
could come and bury it,
bit by slimy bit.
But her dream always ends
when the hungry sleeper wakes
and swallows it again.
