CAPE BRETON 2003

Acres and acres of Christmas trees
And stands of purple loosestrife,
Queen Anne’s lace massed
Along the skyline ridge
Straight at the coming dawn.
Deer run knee-deep in morning mist
And a moose tramps steaming
From the woods, fresh
From his brutish dreams.
On the knife-edge of sun
His silhouette tops the rise
Before he lumbers off
Toward silence and evergreen meadows
And his old rough tracks through the pines.
