THE AWAKENING
By Claire Hersom
Climbing tenements of zigzagging porches
in rigid slacks, straight backed,
proud of their Mother Marys – I never saw
old Quebec etched on your face
clear gaze, and skin of Renoir’s palette,
like your pink, green and brass blue clapboard,
Hot black eyes churn in my belly, I who have
nothing I can say to apologize
for what my people said you were,
coming out of the same Kennebec shoe shops
like flies on sweltering August days.
The lie broke, here on Quebec’s Plains of Abraham,
flew up over the St. Lawrence, twirling into
the factory smoke and seafaring
tankers from Sweden. My eyes full of tears,
and with the sweetness of a child, you
directed me to the Old Wall to lean and watch,
breath the same air as Bishops,
soldiers and Catholic school girls.
An unexpected token, I stood for all of them
crying in the wind off the bay.
