THE ACCIDENT

Once I hit a dog
With my car
There was a thump.
No screeching or wailing
Just a thump.
I saw the dog
It was little
Then it was gone.
All morning I searched
In a strange neighborhood
For a dog I never knew
And would never see again
No one witnessed
My murderous act
To make it more real
There was no closure
Just guilt
And I felt very sad.
And it’s unfinished business
Still strong in my head
That moment
That thump
Then silence
