THE CALL

It was a morning in October
New Englanders often talk of
no choice but to open the porch door
crisp air lifting you
and head up the tractor path
eyes full of expectancy
for who knows what.
It must be a sort of imprinting,
like geese turning direction at the slightest
innuendo of a wing
or a child automatically leaning
toward a mother’s breast
at the small sucking sound of lips.
It was like that
walking up and over the fields
something rushing through the grass
on an edgy wind,
something you know,
like the smell of earth
slightly chilled; or a faint whisper
beyond the knoll.
