THE NUTHATCH
By Roy Potter
Upside down on the underside
of limbs he walks prospecting
for bugs or steps down the trunk
headfirst like gravity doesn't apply
a serious tapered bird
he sometimes pipes a string
of low whistled notes
with none of the brash cheer
of the chickadees he hangs out with
According to Audubon
his species is suspected of monogamy
having been seen in pairs
in deep forest at dead winter
Come spring a cup of twigs and grass
lined with hair and feathers
holds his future in white speckled eggs
Although we have never spoken
I respect him immensely
warm at the sight of him
taking care of business
