NOVEMBER TIDES
By H. R. Coursen
The tall pines rise as the road eases down
beside a view of bay, serene between
the shores. The muted gold below the screen
of evergreen is an ancient trumpet blown
without a sound to call the wind at last
to rip the leaves away. The birch above
are stick-thin, stark, what becomes of love
when winter, uninvited iconoclast
erases all objects within its blank
and random glance. The trees stand alone
against a moon that pulls against the bank
and rides the waters over meadows, one
by one and covers the names, rank on rank,
and all the dates chiseled upon the stone
