March: Near the Air Station
By H. R. Coursen
The ice is out early this year. The throat
of the bay is full of its shattered face, the look
of Falluja, Jericho, Troy. The tide that took
the flow returns, and down below the float
the anchor-ice chokes the eggs along
the river’s depth. And floods do not create
the meadows that, in April, should translate
to swamp candles, wood lilies, and the song
that gives a pause to northbound birds. A gust
of snow sweeps up the leaves of fall again.
A Navy bomber sends a shadow, just
now, across my face. Death. In Maine
and other places, too, as come it must.
The ice is out, and still within the vein.
