Machias Bay

Where are the paintings of this postcard scene,
the ones of tree-lined islands in the bay
at just that moment before end of day
when slanting sunshine filigrees the green?
Not in the world’s great painting galleries,
nor in the books where famous works appear.
Yet hundreds must have set up easels here,
hoping at least a local judge to please.
Antiquing in some attic you may find
Amid old clothes and other residue
The very thing—a painting of that view,
half-wrapped in butcher’s paper and twice twined,
and on the painting’s corner, in a blur,
the unknown artist’s faded signature.
