LE VIEUX CIMETIÈRE
By M. Kelly Lombardi
Cold and sore and miserable,
recovering slowly from knee
surgery and still aching,
throbbing, I decided to sit
on a stone bench, give the knee
a rest and enjoy the feeling
of respite and solitude
I always find among the stones.
Browsing in one
of the books of Canadian
poetry I had picked
up at the used bookstore I read
through Al Purdy before
I put the book back
and simply rested quietly
contemplating the Crimean
War Memorial.
A youngish man, heavily laden
with a huge pack on his back,
looking like a gatherer
of twigs from an old book of
French fairy tales, passed me,
with a trio of cats
heading towards a small stone wall
enclosure around timeworn tilted
markers. Putting down his pack, the
cats he had on a triple lead
jumped up on the wall next to
him to clean and preen themselves.
He took out a book.
I took out my
notebook and pen. Across the
way we smiled at each other
acknowledging
that we were
kindred souls alive
and comfortable
communing among the dead.
