GRAVEN IMAGES

At four am, the window is a forest,
twisted, stunted, full of openings
to dark places beyond, to vanishings
down the long space where a somnambulist
fragment of an ancient star takes light
away and hides it down in clouds that may
become reality at dawn, as the sway
of this witchcrafted world tucks away the night.
And so I look, for a moment, down the dark
out there. But it is January, thin
glass between this home and the twisted mark
of cold intention there. And what had been
a tunnel outward, becomes instead the work
of deepest winter, trying to get in.
