CAT ISLAND

When I visit my mother’s birthplace,
she is wearing a bright straw hat and sun dress
as she quietly walks
along fossilized coral reef and white sand.
Her shell necklace echoes the frigate birds overhead
as she passes the ancient carcasses of
plantation manors.
She pauses to reflect on the turquoise sea,
then resumes her trek
to the limestone caves
where all past spirits reside.
