BIRD IN RAIN
By Lillian Baker Kennedy
A small, blind bird in an exotic park.
Its raiment is gray. It perches deep
in foliage, among the cinnamon ferns.
No one knows for what it waits
(for those who notice at all)
but one day it breaks into song.
All the other birds ask,
What took you so long?
but the bird never stops,
just sings and chirps
all it felt on the bark,
all the veins branch to branch,
the lush lime green, the streaks of dark
through forty midnight rains run off.
It took that long to slake the drought,
that long—to sing home the rain
