LETTERS FROM BOBOLINK FARM
By Barbara Tatham Johnson

MIFF 2004 DAY EIGHT

Photography by Clif Graves

By the end of the day, the serious Festival buffs will have seen 24 to 28 films, consumed between 8 and 16 boxes of popcorn, and eaten 2 or more meals in a theater.

Verna Bloom talking about the making of Medium Cool at the discussion after the film.

A full-length film arrives at RR2 in a number of film cans. Before the film is shown, these sections of the film are hand- spliced together.

If all goes well, the spliced together full-length film is then carried to the platter and threaded into the projector (box with the "dryer vent" in upper right) for showing.

But tonight, things don't go well. A film slips off its tray onto the floor and into a tangled mess (shown here with about  1/4 still on the floor).

The crowd is patient. In the end, the film cannot be untangled in time for a showing tonight, and cinema three is treated to a second viewing of Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

Editor’s note: With the fall 2008 issue of the journal, we will be starting a new feature where we highlight new books written by some of our contributors. We encourage readers, whenever possible, to buy these books for their own personal libraries, as gifts for family and friends, and perhaps even for their town libraries.
