WILL BARNET: THE NINETIES
On View at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine
From August 4 to November 17, 2002

By Laurie Meunier Graves

Stepping into this exhibit of Will Barnet’s paintings is like stepping into twilight. The colors are muted, and indeed, some of the faces glow like moons. It is cool but not cold. There are portraits of family members and self-portraits, with cats, dogs, and crows twining through many of the pictures.

The bodies of the people are painted in a formalized style reminiscent of ancient Egypt, but the faces are full and expressive. It almost seems as though what is important about the people are their faces, not their bodies, and there is not a single painting of a nude.

In contrast, the cats, crows, and dogs are lithe and fluid. Mr. Barnet captures their animal essence, and they bring a sort of joy and comfort to the pictures.

This luminous exhibit, full of symbols, is serene but certainly not insipid. In the faces of the people, especially Mr. Barnet’s wife, there’s a feeling of power and wisdom.

Mr. Barnet was born in 1911, and, according to the placard at the museum, he has “painted since the age of twelve.” These paintings, done in the 1990s, are an expression of a mature artist who has had plenty of time to look, think, and paint.
