SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

“Wolf Moon Journal” is a progressive literary publication that examines art and issues that are both particular to Maine and go beyond Maine.

We are especially looking for book, theater, movie, and art reviews. However, we rarely turn down a well-written essay. Length is pretty flexible—anywhere from 500 to 2000 words. We publish bi-monthly on the web and in print. All rights belong to the writer, and payment is in copies of the journal.

With book, theater, and movie reviews, we are looking for a description of plot where all is not revealed. Each review should also include thoughtful and detailed analysis. With art reviews, we like a description of the exhibit and, again, thoughtful analysis.

With essays, the subject matter is open, but they should contain some idea or notion that the writer is exploring. “Wolf Moon’s” slant is progressive, and writers should take this into account when submitting political essays and commentary.

With poetry, the subject and style and length are completely open. However, we are looking for a precision of language, where one word inevitably follows another word.

Photographic submissions are accepted. Submissions need to be in high resolution (full resolution output of a 6 mega pixel or better camera) and in digital format. (Tiff preferred, jpg accepted).  Photographs submitted to accompany an article may be used if somewhat below this standard if in our estimation they can be reproduced adequately in the journal.

The quality of writing is important. we use “The Chicago Manual of Style” as a guide and “The Elements of Style” by Strunk and White. As a rule, we are not interested in pieces that are full of slang or written in a breezy style. For a sense of what we are looking for, read some of the pieces in the journal.

All essay, review or poetry submissions must be sent by email as an attachment in Open office or Microsoft Word format. We cannot accept essay, review or poetry submissions on paper or by postal mail. All pieces are edited, but the edited copy for all non-trivial changes are always sent to the writer for approval.

All photographic submissions are subject to photo editing to enhance presentation in the print journal and will be modified to reduced size if used on the web.
